Yesterday, Santi Garrido and I could enjoy a good day of banding and observation of birds in the Riu Magre (Catadau, La Ribera Alta) . As for banding, were labeled the following species and specimens:
Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis ) 3 ex.
Pipit (Anthus pratensis ) 1 ex. Cetti
(Cettia Cetti ) 4 ex. Bluethroat
White Medal (Luscinia svecica cyanecula ) 1 ex.
Sardinian warbler (Sylvia melanocephala ) 1 ex.
Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla ) 1 ex. Common Chiffchaff
(Phylloscopus collybita ) 43 ex.
Tit (Parus major ) 1 ex. Bird
Moscón ( Remiz pendulinus ) 1 ex.
On the other hand, we could hear perfectly at close range the claim and even the drumming of a great spotted woodpecker ( Dendrocopos major) in a mesquite along the banks of the channel. This is an interesting observation, since in this area the Magro completely lacks riparian forest and there is no pine or other trees nearby.
Apart from this, most interestingly, a common tern ( Hirundo rustica) a cabochon (Porphyrio Porphyrio ) observed and heard some more, a Great Egret ( Egretta alba) flying over the weir, a marsh harrier ( Circus aeruginosus) , 3 buzzard (Buteo buteo ) numerous rails (Rallus aquaticus ) claiming the vegetation, little grebe ( Tachybaptus ruficollis) , moorhens (Gallinula chloropus ) , mallards (Anas platyrrhynchos ) , egrets (Egretta garzetta ) , cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis ) , Heron (Ardea cinerea ) , Common snipe (Gallinago gallinago ) , etc.
This area is about exceptional wildlife values \u200b\u200bat regional level is a shame that the river is used as a waterfowl hunting ground instead of being protected by some level of protection, however small. It is a very small space and subjected to a brutal hunting pressure, as we have seen in more than one occasion.
We will prepare a report highlighting the natural values \u200b\u200bof this space, send it to Conselleria to let us know about it and requesting a declaration of this area with the kind of protection that is more consistent with the conservation of values .
