03/05/2009 I had not write anything in the Forum , so here goes. Of 17 April to 29th April I was in Columbretes banding migrating birds within Piccole Isole project :
The place is charming, and that for me has been very good experience.
On day 17, en route to the Islands , I could not see the first arrivals shearwaters to 3 miles offshore ... That equals about 5 miles and beak, I think, which is not unusual to have so many days when we start looking at the horizon and we can hardly see a puffin happen. Then there are, swimming and so quiet, but hidden from our eyes. The journey continues and in just 2 hours after leaving the Port of Castellón reached the Illa Grossa , ready to disembark. On the way was looking to find passerines, but I see no one, just gulls, shearwaters, terns and a pelican . Will there be one on the island? Hard to believe that both are capable of crossing the sea to swim with the imminent danger of drowning in the slightest weakness ... that lasts is the migration ! I am repeating the image of the laundress inn on the Pride of Bilbao Rafa commenting long ago, a bird so small in the middle of the vastness.
Already in the Illa Grossa , is that this is a hotbed of life. The island is covered with low vegetation (to see what stake the tree supports the wind) and abundant lizards (Podarcis atrata) and yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis) . The colony of Audouin (Larus audouinii) is near The Ferrera, making it difficult to observe. As I walk, many birds come out of hiding in the bushes and put a flutter in search of cache, while Shrike (Lanius senator) the watch from their perches, from which the lizards and grasshoppers are also future victims. At night you can hear the "meow " of Cory's shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea) and days later began to arrive early Eleonora's falcon (Falco eleonorae) .. . As if that were not enough, in mid-stay, fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) spend a couple of days around the island, from which we can see the jets ejected, and with luck, the back of some while submerged.
Illes Columbretes
In this environment I banding on the island from sunrise to sunset for 13 days. A time where I could see rare species observed, and others less so. I also comment on Ximo Baixeras (known entomologist Valencia) the presence of a species of dragonfly on the island (Hemianax Ephippiger) and the advent and progress of thousands of butterflies Vanessa cardui they reached the island way of Scandinavia. Next to one of the guards did numerous readings michahellis (mostly local, but some of the Delta and Baleares) and helped in the census of gulls . A comprehensive experience which I can only put a but ... I forgot my camera at home!
Now I pass the list of birds banded only during mi estancia (primeros anillamientos) , para que os hagais una idea de la cantidad de pájaros que migran a través del mar, pues el paso empezó antes y aún continúa:
